Africa brings us a fruit which is extraordinary from a nutritional point of view. The baobab contains 6 times more vitamin C than oranges.
In Africa the baobab has, for centuries, been considered a source of natural well-being. The Adansonia digitata grows in the savannahs and in the driest regions of Africa. They are large trees which can reach over 30 meters in height while their trunks can exceed 20 meters in diameter. These trees serve as meeting places and offer shade and shelter to travellers. Their hollow logs are also useful for storing food and water.
It is a high-energy food as in the Baobab’s pulp we can find 75.6% carbohydrates (a source of energy), 2.3% proteins and only 0.27% fat. The fruit is known for its high concentration of vitamin C: 100g of pulp offers 300-500mg of vitamin C, an average which is seven times more than that in 100g of biological orange juice.
It is known that vitamin C is very important for its antioxidant ability and protection against free radicals. Baobab pulp has a high amount of fibre (44%), both soluble (high prebiotic power) and insoluble (fibre that influences our ability to digest food and helps strengthen our gut and intestinal transit).
The fruit also contains significant amounts of other essential vitamins such as thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), essential for the optimal development of our body and the integrity of our cells, nervous system, eyes and skin, and niacin (vitamin B3), essential for metabolic functions, a significant amount of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine which is involved in the development of substances that regulate mood, necessary for the body to make antibodies and increase muscle performance) and vitamin B12.
The fruit is also rich in minerals and essential fatty acids: in 100g of pulp we can find 293mg of calcium (three times more than that in cow´s milk), 231mg of potassium, 96/118mg of phosphorus, 7mg of iron (bioavailable by the presence of vitamin C) and alpha-linoleic acid (27mg per gram of dry product).
Instructions for use: We recommend one heaped teaspoon (3g) of baobab powder mixed with water or juice, once or twice a day. Ideally it should be taken in the morning and/or afternoon. Not recommended for persons intolerant to gluten.
