Mother Nature not only blesses us by means of large fruits and plants but also by means of bushes and small fruits. This is the case of Myrciaria dubia which is the scientific name for camu camu. This plant is native to the Amazon forest, especially in the counties: Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. This plant has a semi-aquatic nature and its small fruit surprises us with a wide variety of properties and qualities which are beneficial to our health. It’s considered one of the best fruits in the world and, above all, one of the most important sources of vitamin C.

 Origen and Description

Camu camu grows naturally on the shores of rivers, lakes and streams of the Amazon. The highest concentration and diversity of camu camu is found in the Peruvian Amazon along the Ucayali and Amazonas rivers.
This small bush, which belongs to plants of semi-aquatic origin, can stay up to 7 months underwater, during long flooding periods, at a temperature of about 20-30° without altering its properties. Its fruit possesses a wide range of properties amongst which the most noteworthy are: it’s excellence as an astringent, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, emollient, nutritive, antiviral, anti-migraine, antidepressant and is a natural weight-loss.

 Uses
  • Camu camu is a fruit that delivers its qualities even when eaten naturally. However, it is mostly found processed due to its high export demand.
  • It is found as juice, nectar, marmalade, ice cream and is not only consumed in the food industry but also in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Due to its high citric acid in citric acid, it is usually used in the manufacture of multivitamins combined with other fruits.
  • In the pharmaceutical industry the pulp of camu camu is used in the manufacture of tablets and capsules as a natural source of vitamin C.
